Thought provoking piece.
I hope we DO turn our backs on Oil.
It's killing us.

Probably not while there is a drop remaining. The twilight referred to is more about the move to PetroEuros, PetroRubles, PetroYen, PetroRials, etc., with the dollar left in the dust. How significant this might really be is open to debate, but as a symbol it terrifies the U.S. government, and may have been a significant reason for the present adventure in Iraq - Iraq's switch to trading in PetroEuros. And now Iran is in the process of leaving the PetroDollar behind.

The focus is on China, I'm afraid, they own too much of EVERY country at this point.(including Canada)
America is waking up to discover, they are redundant.
Only need to look at the trade disparity.

True enough, but so far nobody is talking about PetroRenminbis or PetroYuan.

Who would be a better choice to hold the lion's share of the US$10 trillion national debt?

We will never be insignificant so long as we have the firepower, right?

No one. Debt is never good, and debt to someone diametrically opposite in ideology, is down-right negligent.
Can you imagine, if you, or I, ran our lives like the Govt. runs their finances?
They would swoop down, and take EVERYTHING from us.
My Uncle used to say
"The best time to start saving money, is when you have none"
A bit of a joke, probably should be "before you have none."

Unfortunately, I have run most of my life like the government runs its finances - my bad.

As for diametrically opposed ideologies - mega-corporate welfare capitalism and non-stop propaganda on its behalf to keep the little guys in check - seems to me that describes both countries.

You're spending millions of dollars overbudget?
Borrowing money from the Chinese?
Maybe you owe money, but what is happening on the Federal level is so unbelievable, it's hard to fathom anyone being even close to spending what is being wasted daily, never mind a lifetime.
