The Meaning of ENJOY

Mon Sep 18, 2006, 8:22 AM
What do you Enjoy?

While this may seem like material for a sermon, it is really just about some general reprogramming I'm trying on myself.

When you have taken part in something, do you ask yourself afterward if you enjoyed it?
What does that mean? I've always been asking if it gave me pleasure, if I took away something worthwhile from it. But that is really not at all what the word means.
To en-joy is to fill with joy. Its about what you bring to an activity or experience, rather than what you take away. You may say that this is merely semantics, but in fact it is a profoundly different way to live one's life. I'm working on it. From now on I'll ask myself: Did that movie enjoy me?

How exactly can a movie enjoy you? I am curious now.

It has been my goal for quite some time now, that whenever I am with friends and/or meeting new people, I should make them laugh at least once. So far, it's been a good way to keep the conversation flowing, even if they aren't laughing.

Precisely by the definition given: to enjoy = to fill with joy, and a good movie can fill me with joy, yes?
Perhaps I misinterpreted the question. I'm taking it to understand that the movie was enjoying you, as opposed to you enjoying the movie?

Just a comment on the peculiar usage we have of the word. The prefix en means to put into or fill with. If I enrage you, I fill you with rage, and if I enjoy you, I fill YOU with joy, not the other way around. At least that is the logic of the word's construction. My real point was that we would be better off to ask what we can bring to an experience to enrich it, rather than simply what we can take away from it, or get out of it. Nothing too profound. don't worry about it.
No worries! :D

Actually, I think you are keying in on a reversal that can really turn things around. By being more of an active component in our own joy- in both creating and recieving it- I think an individual can find far more "bliss" in life.
Moving away from passive consumption towards active creation- that's what it's all about for me.
So in referance to a movie, I would ask myself, first- did it inspire me, open me to new feelings/ideas/perspectives- and then secondly- did I honour that gift by sharing those new things with others?

Okay, so that's getting preachy, can't help it, I swear I was a preacher in a former life, or two... :D
Not too preachy. That is the idea I was getting at. I hope I'm getting better at it and can pass it on to my two-year-old son some day.
Just try to be it and he'll pick it up (he already is)- even the trying is something to learn/teach/show :-)
I went through a similar thing a while ago with the word present- kind of walking around it and looking at it from it's different angles. With an emphasis on moving from a passive to an active engagement of the idea behind the word.
And to answer the question what do I enjoy- an experience that's open to giving as well as recieving in the creation of the moment that has substance that can be carried into the next... or is that just too much :P
